Where can we find help?

My stepdaughter works at a convenient store while in college. Recently they began taking as much as $80 out of her check, telling her that her register was short. She never signed anything telling them they could take money out of her check. Also, when she counts her drawer down herself, she is not short. Suddenly, after the owners/managers do the paperwork, she comes up short. I managed a c-store for many years and we were to never take money out of a paycheck for shortages. I heard this was illegal, especially if they can't prove it was her drawer that the shortage came from. She's worked hard for her money and needs it for school. Where can we find help without paying outright for a lawyer? That would cost more than the money she's trying to get back.

If it helps, we live in Alabama.

Where can we find help?
She should start with your state labor commission.

You are right - it is illegal.

She should start asking for proof (she needs it for losses on her income tax) and mention the IRS if they do not honor her request.

In the end, you may have to hire an attorney.
