Running out of disk space, hardly any user files, already know disk housekeeping, defrag, cleanup, etc. Why so many hidden files? Are they a part of software?
40 Mb RAM EMS, Pentium
Available space on drive C: 19MB of 517MB (FAT32)
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (19MB free)
Please don't say buy a newer computer.
24 Mb Hidden files -- Is this normal for Windows 98 Updated?
Don't delete ANY hidden files; they are almost always hidden for a reason (needed for programs or operating system).
If you don't want to buy a new computer you can buy a new hard drive if you need more space, which you do (you can probably find a new 40 GB for $20 if you try). Having that little space left can significantly slow down your computer.
But I have to say it, buy a newer computer. ; )
Seriously, I bought a computer at an auction (silent, not eBay) about a year ago that was at LEAST 10 times better than that (Pentium III, 128 RAM, 12 GB hard drive, CD-RW drive, monitor / keyboard / speakers), for only $16.67.
Reply:Well 517 mb is'nt much to work with. The hidden files are nothing as far as size goes, don't delete them. Some things you can remove are things like "Desktop Themes", a lot of the extra sound files can go. Backgrounds can go. Do you ever use windows help, I think its worthless, that can go. Another thing people don't notice, open explorer, see if your Windows directory has a bunch of blue files in it. These are Windows update components, and info for reverting you PC back to before the update, these can safely be deleted.
Reply:Go to best buy or another computer store and get yourself a USB external hardrive. Then plug it in and its like haveing, literly double the space and you can use all of it for yourself and clear some of the C: dirve for the softwars.
Sumary: 1. get external hardrive.
2. move all personal files to it.
3. Turn over the C: drive for program files only.
4. use the external hardrive for program overflow
(Note: Make sure it is a USB external hardrive and you have a free USB port.)
